Web6 mei 2013 · Kalaupapa, on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, is both the country's smallest county—and a leper colony with seven existing patients, all in their 70s. The village is the site of a former settlement for people with leprosy. At its peak, about 1,200 men, women, and children were exiled to Kalaupapa Peninsula. The isolation law was enacted by King Kamehameha V and remained in effect until its repeal in 1969. Today, about five people who formerly had leprosy continue to live there. The colony is now included within Kalaupapa National Historical Park.
